Five basic massage moves

There are five basic massage movements.

  • Effleurage
  • Friction
  • Petrissage
  • Tapotement
  • Vibration

Effleurage

Effleurage is done using the palm of the hands or forearms. There is a need to apply even pressure to the area that is being worked on and towards the lymphatic and venous flow.

This includes:

  • Superficial stroking & effleurage
  • Deep stroking & effleurage

This movement stimulates the sensory nerve endings, sending a reaction through the skin`s circulatory network.

The stroking movement generally will help the client you feel relaxed.

It improves your lymphatic circulation, which removes waste products.

Petrissage

This technique puts pressure on muscles and tissues. Petrissage stretching, squeezing, and kneading techniques reduce muscle knots and spasms, boost blood circulation, and improve general muscle function.

This type of massage can help relieve tension, muscle pain and enhance recovery. Boosting circulation thus feeding and nourishing the tissues.

This technique stretches and loosens soft tissue in the body making your joints more moveable.

When performed slowly, it can have a relaxing, soothing, and sedative effect.

Tapotements

A technique commonly associated with Swedish massage. Rhythmic percussion movements often applied with the edge of the hand or fingertips.

These strokes can be extremely stimulating.

Movements include heating, pinching, pounding, cupping, and hacking.
